LOCAL NEWS Last updated at 11:24 PM on 22/02/10 Court news The Truro Daily News Conditional sentence for Bible Hill man who breached probation TRURO – A Bible Hill man convicted of multiple counts of breaching his probation terms by drinking has been handed a six-month conditional sentence. Thomas Michael Johnson, 21, of 42 Wright Ave., was ordered to spend the first three months of his sentence at the Harvest House addiction centre in Moncton. For the following three months he is to be subject to a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Johnson was also convicted of stealing from the NSLC and of breaking a sprinkler at the Truro police station. His sentencing conditions also include not possessing or consuming alcohol or illicit drugs, staying away from establishments where booze is sold and successfully taking counselling for alcohol or drug use. As well, Johnson was ordered to not associate with anyone with a known criminal record. Impaired driving results in house arrest, probation TRURO – A Truro man convicted of impaired driving was hit with a four-month conditional sentence and placed on probation for 12 months. Perry Vincent Shearer, 52, 343 Robie St., Apt. 2, also had his licence revoked for two years. Shearer is to spend the first month of his sentence under house arrest and the final three months under a 10 p.m to 7 a.m. curfew. Sentencing conditions also include not possessing or consuming alcohol or illicit drugs, not entering drinking establishments and being assessed regarding counselling for alcohol use and mental health. Failure to take counselling results in community service TRURO – Failing to take counselling as directed and not performing a court-ordered 20 hours community service has led to a six-month conditional sentence for a Truro man. Alexander Kris Faulkner, 47, of 54 Alice St., Apt. 1, was ordered to spend the first three months under house arrest. For the following three months he is to adhere to a curfew from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. During the six months, Faulkner is not to possess or consume alcohol or illicit drugs, stay away from drinking establishments and take counselling for alcohol and drug use and mental health.

August 2011 Meeting News
-We welcome new member Lori Millette.
-madd now has a new logo: the glass & keys symbol has been removed & are now all lowercase letters.
-There's a leadership conference in Ont. Sept. 23-25, Margaret & Joy will attend.
-We held a sobriety checkpoint in Tatamagouche first week of Aug which resulted in RCMP Northern Traffic Services getting an impaired driver off the roads(see story of 70yr old driver below).
-Our next meeting will be held Sept.26, all are welcome to attend.
September Meeting News:
-We welcome new member Kayla Coleman
-We held 4 more checkpoints since last meeting. One checkpoint was done in Tatamagouche with RCMP Traffic Services, 2 people received 7 day suspensions. At another checkpoint police stopped a vehicle with drugs in it.
-There will be multimedia presentations at local schools in the coming weeks.
-Coming up in Nov. is the annual tree lighting & Santa Claus parade, we will be having our annual Red Ribbon Launch during the tree lighting.
- Our next meeting will be held at Frank & Gino's on Sun. Oct.30 at 6:30pm for our Annual General Meeting, if you would like to attend, email our office by Oct.20.

-We held our Annual General Meeting on Oct.30 at Frank & Gino's Restaurant in Truro. We had a good meeting & enjoyed the delicious food.
-We welcomed new member Ken Fitzgerald.
-We had 2 multimedia shows in Oct, one was at Bible Hill Jr High, the other was at South Colchester Academy.
-Project Red Ribbon will be launched at Truro's Tree Lighting & we will also be in the Santa Claus Parade.
November Meeting News:
-Our Red Ribbon Launch at the tree lighting & the Santa Claus parade went well. We handed out hot chocolate & timbits.
- Margaret did a presentation at the Nova Scotia Agriculture College in mid November with a good turnout.
- We will not have a meeting in December due to the holidays, next meeting will be Jan.30/12 @ 6:30pm

MADD Canada has over two million supporters coast to coast. Every day, volunteers of MADD Canada must deal with the senseless loss of lives and human carnage that result from impaired driving. The sad reality is the tragic results of alcohol-related crashes are 100% preventable. We welcome volunteers who are committed to carrying out our mission – “to stop impaired driving and support victims of this violent crime.”

An individual who offers emotional support to victims of impaired driving crashes, guidance through the criminal justice system, and referral for other needs related to the crash. Training provided by MADD Canada's Victim Services.
Court Monitoring:
Individuals attend court and keep track of impaired charges and how they are handled. This is done to encourage the justice system to recognize the seriousness of the crime and to sentence offenders accordingly.
Public Education and Awareness:
Raising awareness in local communities about the dangers of drinking and driving through mall displays, parades, fairs, literature, etc. MADD Canada provides materials to support individuals in this capacity.
Public Speaking:
Not only educate others through presentations about this senseless tragedy but also give alternatives to drinking and driving. MADD Canada provides materials to support individuals in this capacity.
Fundraising:
Raise money through local sponsorship, donations, memberships, special events, etc.

1. Driving unreasonably fast, slow or at an inconsistent speed.
2. Drifting in and out of lanes.
3. Tailgating and changing lanes frequently.
4. Making exceptionally wide turns.
5. Changing lanes or passing without sufficient clearance.
6. Overshooting or stopping well before stop signs or stop
lights.
7. Disregarding signals and lights.
